Careers in Sustainability
In this talk, you will learn about why the approach of sustainability has become an important way to manage our societal needs. Governments and industry now include sustainable social and environmental expectations as a key component of their plans and activities. Industries and organizations that were once unconcerned about environmental and societal impacts are now seeking talent with sustainability qualifications. Employers in many sectors such as energy, government, real estate, manufacturing, marketing and public relations, building, food science, engineering, and teaching are looking to add sustainability expertise in their portfolios.
You’ll also hear about exciting programming SAIT has in the sustainability space. The MacPhail School of Energy has two diplomas in the areas of sustainability, water and environment. For example, SAIT has created the first Integrated Water Management diploma in Canada to give students demonstrable knowledge of the complex elements, interfaces, and approaches considered in supporting sustainability in water management as well as specialized applied knowledge in environmental technologies and industry applications. If you are passionate about or interested in sustainability, these programs can set you on the path to a rewarding career.

Energy Transition
Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, growth in economic prosperity has been closely correlated with a growing demand for energy. Fueled primarily by economic growth in Asia, 2 billion additional people are expected to enter the middle class over the next decade. To keep pace with this growth in prosperity, it is expected that demand for energy will increase by as much as 50% over the next 30 years.
The effects of CO2 emissions on the environment are undeniable. One of the most important challenges of the 21st century is to accelerate the transition towards a low carbon economy while still providing vital energy resources to support economic growth. This means continuing to build on the significant innovations happening in the fossil fuels industries to reduce their environmental footprint as well as innovation to accelerate the viability and adoption of renewable sources of energy.
Industry cannot accomplish this vital transition on its own. Consumers have a key role to play as well. The way that we consume energy and the choices that we make are key drivers in how we optimize and connect all viable forms of energy in responsible ways.
Together, we can reshape how we source, distribute and manage resources to create sustainable value for our communities, our province, for Canada and the world. Join us in tackling the most critical work of our time: empowering future-ready energy.
