Hot Water Flooding with Chemical Additives: A Low-Carbon Alternative to Steam Flooding for Heavy Oil Recovery
In this research project, Dr. Huazhou (Andy) Li and his team propose a novel approach to enhance recovery of heavy oil by replacing steam with hot water and chemical additives. While steam flooding has been widely used, it faces challenges such as high carbon emissions and low sweep efficiency. Our method integrates carefully selected chemical additives into hot water injection, effectively mitigating these issues while maintaining or improving recovery performance. Through extensive laboratory experiments, we have identified several promising additives that significantly enhance oil recovery by reducing interfacial tension, altering wettability, and promoting emulsification. Currently, our industrial partner is conducting pilot tests in a heavy oil field, with initial results demonstrating strong potential. This innovative technology offers a more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional steam flooding, contributing to improved oil recovery with a reduced carbon footprint.

The “A” gathering station was commissioned in 1987, starting the full-field cold development through vertical wells. Gross liquid production is exported to “N” Station.
Steam injection trials were conducted in 3 wells in 2008, confirming that steam could be injected at the required injection rate. In July 2009, the first phase of thermal development in “A” started: steam flood with vertical wells in “A” West; and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) in “A” East.
