Hot Water Flooding with Chemical Additives: A Low-Carbon Alternative to Steam Flooding for Heavy Oil Recovery

In this research project, Dr. Huazhou (Andy) Li and his team propose a novel approach to enhance recovery of heavy oil by replacing steam with hot water and chemical additives. While steam flooding has been widely used, it faces challenges such as high carbon emissions and low sweep efficiency. Our method integrates carefully selected chemical additives into hot water injection, effectively mitigating these issues while maintaining or improving recovery performance. Through extensive laboratory experiments, we have identified several promising additives that significantly enhance oil recovery by reducing interfacial tension, altering wettability, and promoting emulsification. Currently, our industrial partner is conducting pilot tests in a heavy oil field, with initial results demonstrating strong potential. This innovative technology offers a more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional steam flooding, contributing to improved oil recovery with a reduced carbon footprint.

Thermal Production System Optimization for Lower Energy Intensity Through Implementation of Digital EEST Tool

The “A” was discovered in 1972 by AL-H1. Cold production started in 1984 through temporary cold production facilities. The “A” gathering station was commissioned in 1987, starting the full-field cold development through vertical wells. Gross liquid production is exported to “N” Station.
Steam injection trials were conducted in 3 wells in 2008, confirming that steam could be injected at the required injection rate. In July 2009, the first phase of thermal development in “A” started: steam flood with vertical wells in “A” West; and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) in “A” East.

Application of Satellite and Aircraft Measurements in Methane Emissions Reduction

As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, increasing attention is being paid to the sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which are the main culprits of ozone layer depletion responsible for global warming and its resultant climate consequences. Carbon di-oxide (CO2) is the most consequential GHG responsible for about three-quarters of emissions and notorious for the length of time it lingers in the atmosphere once released – thousands of years. A lot of research has gone into understanding CO2, including methods to reduce its prevalence like Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), Direct Air Carbon Capture (DACC), and others.
