Mike Michonski is a University of Alberta Chemical Engineer graduate with 17 years of experience in oil and gas. He is currently Imperial’s Upstream Digital Manager where he leads a fusion team of 50 IT Professionals and Engineers focused on digital transformation.

Mike started as a facility engineer but early in his career pivoted to a focus and passion in Automation. He had onsite experiences with Imperial’s Oilsands asset Kearl start-up and spent many early years working the instrumentation and controls through that asset’s improvement journey.

He then progressed to Automation Lead on Kearl’s supplemental crusher project, and afterwards as project manager of the Autonomous Haulage project that had completed its full production fleet conversion in 2023. Recently he held leadership roles as Kearl Automation Supervisor overseeing its mine and plant control systems, and as Imperial’s Upstream Integrity Supervisor overseeing inspections and integrity support up until his current role.
