bio

Shashi Persaud is an instructor in Electrical Engineering Technology program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, specializing in the teaching of Electric Machines and Power Systems courses. He also develops and delivers customized training courses for energy utilities in Power System Operation, Electricity Markets, and Renewable Energy.

Shashi is keenly interested in energy and environmental security and the role that renewable energy technologies can play therein, and maintains a keen research interest in renewable energy generation technologies and grid integration issues. Prior to joining SAIT, he was a researcher with the Power Systems Group at Queen’s University – Belfast (QUB), where his research on the impact of wind energy development and power system operation has been influential in expanding the scope for wind power development in Northern Ireland. During his time at QUB he also served as Research Fellow with the QUB Wave Power Research Group. At SAIT, he was instrumental in the establishing of the SAIT-TransAlta Applied Research and Training facility, and is actively involved in the SAIT-Light Up the World (LUTW) initiative to provide off-grid solar PV systems for remote and impoverished communities in Peru. To date, he has led two student volunteer field trips to Peru.

Shashi is graduate of the University of Guyana (B.Eng, G.Dip. Ed), the University of Alberta (M.Sc.) and the Queen's University - Belfast (Ph.D). He also holds a Professional Graduate Certificate in Sustainability from the Harvard University School of Extension Studies and is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of Alberta.
