Samuel Elfassy was appointed Vice President, Safety in July, 2017. Championing Air Canada’s primary cornerstone priority, specifically the safety of its customers, employees and operations at all times. Sam has overall responsibility for safety company-wide, overseeing compliance with and adoption of best practices in safety. He also has oversight for Air Canada’s significant environmental initiatives globally.
With more than 30 years of aviation safety expertise, Sam has held several senior roles at Air Canada including Managing Director, Safety, Environment & Quality, with oversight for internal and external safety, environment and quality services, quality assurance and audits, cross-branch flight safety investigations, emergency response and management, business continuity, risk management and security compliance. Previous leadership roles included Director Flight Technical and Operational Support with responsibility for technical programs, aircraft performance, operations engineering, operational support and IT functions within Flight Operations; and Manager of Regulatory Affairs, with responsibility for development and maintenance of liaison with Transport Canada, FAA and other international regulatory agencies in all jurisdictions Air Canada operates to, in support of Flight Operations.
He is an expert on effective safety cultures within complex safety systems, where transparency, information sharing and the use of technology to analyse complex data and other factors, contribute to stronger safety systems. Sam has lectured at global conferences about safety systems, and led Air Canada’s efforts to support and guide work with St. Michael’s Hospital as they employed Air Canada expertise in Flight Data Analysis to develop and test a technology platform that has the potential to transform the safety culture and practices of surgery, not just in Canada, but globally.
Sam holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from York University. He is currently the Chair of North York General Hospital's (NYGH) Board of Governors. He previously had served as Vice Chair of North York General Hospital's Board of Governors and a key member of the Quality Committee of the Board, and he is a past Chair of North York General Hospital Foundation’s Board of Governors.
