Colton Atkinson is a chemist from Grande Prairie, Alberta born in 1999. In 2017, he started his academic career at the University of Calgary, enrolling in the Bachelor of Science program. In April of 2021 he graduated, earning a bachelor's degree in Chemistry with placement on the Dean’s List for both the 2019 and 2020 academic years. Additionally, he was able to earn the Frank Adam Scholarship in Physical Chemistry in 2020. During the summers between each academic year, he worked as a Materials Technologist at a small civil engineering firm in Grande Prairie called Project Engineering. In this role he was the primary team member responsible for performing quality control and assurance testing on materials commonly used in road construction, namely, asphalt products. Joining the Welch Research Group in January 2022 to earn an MSc in Chemistry, he plans to utilize his combined knowledge of asphalt products and chemistry to develop conjugated organic materials both inspired by and utilizing components of asphaltenes.
